This work deals with Usûl al-Fiqh (Foundations of Law). It is a summary entitled "The Book of Leaves (Kitâb al-Waraqât)" whose author is the great Shafi'i jurist al-Juwayni nicknamed Imam al-Haramayn (4th century of the Hijra). This book was commented on several times until the 17th century; it was inscribed in the curriculum of Muslim higher schools and students learned it by heart. Its translation by the great Arabicist Léon Bercher retains all its interest, and its reissue will allow French-speaking readers to rediscover the importance accorded by classical Islam to the most typically Islamic and most appealing of the branches of traditional Muslim teaching.
