The issue of Muslim women today is held hostage between two extreme perceptions: that of a very rigid conservative Islamic approach and that of a Western, ethnocentric and Islamophobic approach. These two conceptions lead to a dead end; it is almost impossible to conceive even the outline of a debate to clarify viewpoints, so blinded are the supporters on both sides by their respective certainties.
However, what is new today is that within this intellectual ferment, Muslim women are trying to reclaim their voice in order to take back control of their own destiny! Indeed, today, many Muslim intellectual women, living in Muslim societies but also in the West, through their academic, social and theological research and especially in the name of their faith, will challenge a large number of prejudices on this question. They will especially contest the classical analysis which stipulates that inequality between men and women and its corollary of discriminatory measures are an inherent part of the Sacred Text by demonstrating that it is, in fact, certain biased readings, endorsed by patriarchal customs, that have legitimized these same inequalities…
It is therefore this movement of liberation we are talking about, a feminine liberation that should be free to make its own choices, to rewrite its history and to define its own spaces of freedom… A liberation firmly rooted in its spiritual belonging but which seeks to be open to all human riches and ready to share with others, all others, the true universal values of ethics and justice.
