The author
Abu Hamid Al-Ghazâlî (1058–1111) is one of the greatest theologians, philosophers and mystics of Islam. Nicknamed Hujjat al-Islam (the Proof of Islam), he exercised considerable influence on medieval and contemporary Islamic thought. His masterwork, Ihyâ' 'Ulûm ad-Dîn (Revivification of the Sciences of Religion), remains to this day an essential reference for Islamic spirituality and ethics.
