Al-Kabīr (الكَبِير), "The Infinitely Great," is the Name of Allah whose echo rhythms the entire life of the Muslim: it is the one proclaimed by the takbīr — Allāhu Akbar — proclaimed from the top of the minarets, repeated at every movement of prayer, dozens of times a day. Allah is greater: greater than what occupies us, greater than what worries us, greater than everything the mind can conceive.
What does Al-Kabīr mean?
The name Al-Kabīr comes from the Arabic root kāf-bā'-rā' (ك ب ر), which expresses greatness. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- Greatness of essence: Allah is greater than any creature; the heavens and the earth are insignificant in regard to His greatness.
- Greatness of attributes: His knowledge, His power, His wisdom admit neither rival nor comparison.
- Exclusive greatness: kibriyā' (sovereign greatness) belongs to Him alone; whoever claims it among the creatures usurps what does not belong to them.
Al-Kabīr in the Qur'an
Allah says:
عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ الْكَبِيرُ الْمُتَعَالِ
« The Knower of the unseen and the visible, the Great, the Most High. » (Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13:9)
And also:
وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْكَبِيرُ
« …and that Allah is, He, the Most High, the Great. » (Surah Luqmān, 31:30)
In a hadith qudsi, Allah says: « Majesty is My garment and greatness My cloak: whoever disputes with Me over either of them, I will punish him. » (reported by Muslim) Greatness is an exclusive divine attribute — which is why pride, in the creature, is so gravely condemned.
Allāhu Akbar: The Name that Rhythms Life
The takbīr opens the call to prayer, inaugurates each salât (takbīrat al-ihrām) and accompanies every change of posture. On festival days, it fills the streets; faced with good news, it bursts from the believer's lips.
Its significance is a life program: Allāhu Akbar — Allah is greater than what I am about to abandon for Him. Greater than the commerce we interrupt to pray, than the sleep we cut short at dawn, than the fear that would silence the truth.
Living with Al-Kabīr in Daily Life
1. Let the takbīr put the world in order
When you say Allāhu Akbar while entering prayer, truly dismiss what occupied your mind: if Allah is Greater, then the urgent file, the debt, the conflict can wait a few minutes. Prayer becomes a refuge, not a distracted parenthesis.
2. Deflate fears
Fear of the future, of a superior, of a lack? The believer measures every threat by the standard of Al-Kabīr: no creature is great before Him. This conviction gives a quiet courage that nothing else provides.
3. Flee from pride
The Prophet ﷺ said: "He will not enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a grain of mustard seed of pride." (Muslim) To know Al-Kabīr is to understand that aggrandizing oneself is a usurpation — and that man's true greatness lies in his servitude to the Greatest.
Invocation with the Name Al-Kabīr
Allah says: "Call upon Him by His most beautiful Names" (7:180). Beyond daily takbīr, one can glorify Allah with the complete formula of praise: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا — "Allah is infinitely great, abundant praise be to Allah, and glory be to Allah morning and evening", a formula which a companion pronounced at the opening of prayer and concerning which the Prophet ﷺ said that the gates of heaven had opened for it. What is the difference between Al-Kabīr and Al-'Adhīm?
Both Names express greatness. Al-Kabīr affirms that Allah surpasses everything — this is the comparative greatness of takbīr; Al-'Adhīm speaks of the majestic immensity that fills hearts with reverent awe. The Quran uses them both alongside Al-'Alī, the Most High.
What exactly does "Allāhu Akbar" mean?
