Al-Bāsit (الباسط) — calligraphie, Les 99 Noms d'Allah | AL-IMEN

Al-Bāsit (البَاسِط), "The One who extends," "The One who unfolds His generosity," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah — the luminous twin of Al-Qābid, "The One who withholds." It designates The One who expands sustenance, dilates hearts, unfolds His mercy upon the creatures and extends His hand, every night as every day, toward the one who returns to Him.

What Does Al-Bāsit Mean?

The name Al-Bāsit comes from the Arabic root bā-sīn-tā (ب س ط), which evokes the idea of extending, unfolding, enlarging. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:

  • The One Who Expands Sustenance: He unfolds rizq for whom He wills, multiplies wealth, opens doors — to the point that the servant receives beyond his needs.
  • The One Who Dilates Hearts: joy, fervor, the opening of the breast to faith are His work — it is He Who "expands" the soul after contraction.
  • The One Who Extends His Hand to the Repentant: His generosity is not limited to wealth — it extends to forgiveness, offered without ceasing to those who turn to Him.

Al-Bāsit in the Quran

Allah says:

وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
« And Allah restricts and extends (His favors), and to Him you will be returned. » (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:245)

And regarding His promise of compensation:

« And whatever you spend, He will replace it, and He is the Best of providers. » (Surah Saba', 34:39)

The Prophet ﷺ revealed a profound dimension of this divine « extension »: « Allah extends His hand during the night so that he who erred during the day may repent, and He extends His hand during the day so that he who erred during the night may repent — until the sun rises from the west. » (reported by Muslim). Al-Bāsit never ceases to extend His hand.

Living with Al-Bāsit Daily

1. Receive abundance as a trust

When Allah extends your sustenance, the question is not "why me?" but "for what purpose?". Ease is a responsibility: whoever understands Al-Bāsit allows the good received to circulate — family, loved ones, the needy — rather than withholding it.

2. Give so that the gift expands

The promise of verse 34:39 is clear: what is spent for Allah is replaced. The servant's generosity calls forth divine expansion; the open hand never truly empties, for it draws from a boundless treasure.

3. Ask for the dilation of the heart

The most precious of expansions is not material: it is the open breast — sharh as-sadr — that Mūsā asked for: "My Lord, expand for me my breast, and ease my task" (Surah Tā-Hā, 20:25-26). A dilated heart bears trials with serenity and worship with gentleness.

Invocation with the name Al-Bāsit

One can take up the Qur'anic invocation of Mūsā: رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي
"Lord, open my breast for me and ease my task." (Surah Tā-Hā, 20:25-26). And in accordance with verse 7:180, invoke: "Yā Bāsit, ubsut 'alayya min fadlika wa rahmatika" — "O You who extend, unfold upon me Your grace and Your mercy", for the sustenance of the body as well as that of the heart.

Frequently Asked Questions about Al-Bāsit

What is the difference between Al-Bāsit and Al-Wahhāb?

Al-Wahhāb emphasizes the gratuity of the gift — offered without return or request; Al-Bāsit emphasizes its magnitude and deployment: Allah expands, extends, multiplies what He grants, in wealth as in hearts.

Why does Allah extend for some and withhold for others?

By wisdom: "If Allah extended His blessings to (all) His servants, they would commit abuses on the earth" (Surah Ash-Shūrā, 42:27). Extension tests gratitude, restriction tests patience — and each can draw closer to Allah the one who lives it with faith.

How do you invoke Allah by this Name?

With its twin, as in tradition: "Yā Qābid, yā Bāsit" — or alone, in the request for opening: "Yā Bāsit", by soliciting the expansion of rizq, time, knowledge, and the breast.
